Know The Date & Celebrate!
There are 6 long weekends in 2017.
Monday, January 2
New Year's Day lands on the Sunday before, so the observation is moved to Monday. This allows citizens to have a long weekend. Many choose to stay home for this particular long weekend. After all, the celebrations of New Year's Eve can often be draining, so the following day allows people to recover.
Monday, January 16
Martin Luther King Day is a holiday to celebrate the accomplishments of Mr. King. It's not a common weekend for traveling, so it's a good chance to get out there and see the world. There are likely to be some places that don't offer this day as a holiday though. Before you start planning a trip, make sure to double check with your place of employment and local schools. It may be a better idea to simply stay home for this long weekend and spend time with the family.
Monday, May 29
Memorial Day commemorates the lives lost during their service in the military. Landing in the spring weather, it's common for people to enjoy a picnic or trip to the beach on this particular day. Many camps will also be opening, so families may choose to go camping for the long weekend. It's also a good chance to plan a short vacation. But, if you're planning to travel, you'll want to plan in advance. This is a very common weekend for traveling.
Monday, September 4
Labor Day is a holiday to celebrate workers' rights. It's a day off work, given to allow workers' more time with their families. Since it falls at the end of summer, many people choose to take one last trip to camp. The weather is still nice and most camps are still open. Because of this, there is likely to be a traffic delay on the highway on Monday night. If you want to beat the traffic, head back into town in the morning. If you don't feel like traveling, there are often festivities held to celebrate the advancement in workers' right, which include rallies and festivals.
Monday, October 9
Columbus Day is not celebrated universally across the states. The following states do not offer a day off on Columbus Day: AK, AR, CA, DE, FL, HI, MI, MN, ND, NV, OR, SD, TX, VT, WA, WI, WY. Much of this is because Columbus Day is controversial. If you're in a state that offers this day as a holiday, you may choose to travel. Since there are many states that don't observe this day, there aren't likely to be traveling delays. It's a good chance to take a short trip. But, make sure that you're in one of the states that observes this holiday before you start planning for your long weekend.
Monday, December 25
Christmas is an almost universal holiday. It's celebrated all across the world. In the United States, it's common to spend Christmas morning with family members. This is often done around a decorated tree while exchanging gifts. In the evening, many families enjoy a large feast. Christmas is a Christian holiday, marking the birth of Jesus Christ. Many choose to spend the time with family. This is a common weekend for traveling. If you're planning to travel on Christmas, make sure you plan in advance.
