1 and 2 Jan 2017 - New Year (Additional holiday)
New Year is celebrated in all Australian but in particular in its capitals. This celebration is always associated with a quite a spectacle. Especially noteworthy are the variety of fireworks. And if you wonder why we have a second New Year's Day? Due to Australian customs when the actual holiday falls on a Sunday, then following Monday is also a day off.

January 26, 2017 - Australia Day (Australia Day)
January 26, 1788, Australia was colonised. For the “white” population of Australia, this is quite a celebration, for the First Nation (Aboriginals) this is merely a reminder of 200 years of disenfranchisement which were to follow. Typical for this day, is the announcement of the Australian of the year.

14 April 2017 - Good Friday
On this day, this is a public holiday. Each Good Friday donations are raised for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

15 April 2017 Easter Saturday

16 April 2017 - Easter Sunday
This public holiday is largely only by the Christian Community observed. At this time (autumn) it is often still very warm. Therefore, Easter is a popular camping time, because of the long weekend.

October 2, 2017 - Labour Day (Labour Day)
Labour Day is an annual holiday which celebrates the eight-hour working day. A victory for workers in the mid-late 19th century.

December 25, 2017 - Christmas Day
In Australia traditionally there is no Christ Child, even in Christian Communities the birth of Jesus is celebrated. Therefore, 24 January, Christmas Eve, is a normal working day. On 25. in the morning Santa Claus visits all children and the Christmas holidays have officially begun. The custom is that already in early December, the Christmas tree is set up and the presents are placed underneath. However, they are only to be opened on the 25th. In addition to presents, stockings are filled with sweets or small toys.

December 26, 2017 - Boxing Day
This day is also known as Saint Stefan's Day. However, not the disciples of Jesus but oStephan, who lived 800 years later. Nevertheless, the Boxing Day is not celebrated as a religious holiday.
Some believe Boxing Day was named as the day after unwrapping all presents when all boxes are thrown away.
