Where Is Christmas Considered a Holiday?
Christmas is a gazette holiday throughout India. Although the holiday itself is Christian, the day off is given to almost everyone. There are no government offices open on Christmas. This includes national and local, even including state offices. There is no post office service and most banks are closed as well. Individual stores may choose to remain open. Christian-owned stores will likely be closed, as it's an important day in their religion. Elsewhere, there is unlikely to be any disruptions to stores and services. The public transportation services will run as they are regularly scheduled as well. It is a religious holiday simply because there are 24 million Christians now in India. Disruptions are most likely in: Goa, Kerala, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram.
Festivities & Events During Christmas
Although Christmas is a holiday, it's unlikely that there will be mass-celebrations. In the areas where there is a large Christian populous, it may be common to see shopping malls decorated. There may even be a mall santa employed to greet young children and offer Christmas wishes. This will be the most common in the areas of India mentioned above. Elsewhere, it's unlikely that any celebrations will take place. Most commonly, Christians will attend church services with their family members. These families will also likely participate in a gift exchange on Christmas morning, particularly those with small children.
A Brief History About Christmas
In the Christian religion, Christmas is celebrated when Jesus Christ was said to be born. The celebrations are universally shared between prayer and church services, and family celebrations. Throughout India, it is unlikely to see mass celebrations of the holiday. Although, some areas may have larger celebrations than others. In other areas of the world, Christmas is a big deal that involves decorating the home and yard, sharing gifts and feasting on delicious food with loved ones.
