Where Is César Chávez Day Considered A Holiday?
It is a state holiday in California, but an optional holiday in Texas and Colorado. There are other states that celebrate the holiday (Arizona, Michigan, Nebraska and New Mexico), but it isn't considered a state holiday in these states. In California, all government buildings will be closed. Schools will also be closed, as well as many businesses. Public transportation will be running on holiday schedules as well. In other states, businesses may choose to close for personal observation of the holiday.

Many social justice speakers use this day to reach out to the community. They repeat the values that César Chávez held regarding social justice and non-violent protesting. In America today, these issues include fair wages and worker's rights. There are many classrooms that hold activities based around the achievements of César Chávez. This may include reading speeches and writing essays that speak about the accomplishments of César Chávez. These would be held in the surrounding days, since California has no school on César Chávez Day. There are often community activities that focus on the achievements of César Chávez as well. There are some businesses that host meals to honor the achievements as well. All of these activities are done to honor César Chávez, as well as keep his ideals alive.
A Brief History Of César Chávez Day
César Chávez was the co-founder of the National Farmers Workers Association. He put his efforts into fighting racial and economic discrimination. He used boycotts and strikes and spoke of non-violent protests. He is remembered for his efforts in fighting against the discrimination, and for having the first successful farmers' union.
