Overview 2017 Long Weekends in Australia

Know The Date & Celebrate!

There are only 3 long weekends throughout Australia in 2017. However, of them, 2 are four-day weekends. You'll want to make sure to get your plans made for those weekends!

Monday, January 2

New Years Day is a holiday for relaxing after the events of New Years Eve. For this reason, it's uncommon that many people will travel. You may choose to travel to enjoy festivities in other locations. If you do, you'll be pleasantly surprised at the lack of traffic congestion. It's a good holiday to plan for traveling. Although New Year's Day lands on the Sunday, it's observation is moved to Monday, allowing a three-day weekend.

Friday, April 14

Good Friday is the beginning of Easter Weekend. This is a four-day weekend in Australia, ending on Easter Monday. It's common that during this weekend, families travel out of town to visit distant relatives. Or, relatives travel to visit. Either way, traveling is common on this weekend. It's important that you plan ahead if you're hoping to see your family. Traditionally, Good Friday is celebrated in churches, listening to special sermons regarding the death of Jesus Christ.

Monday, April 17

Easter Monday ends the Easter weekend. It's a common day of relaxation, though many will choose to spend it in church. After the feast of Easter Sunday, along with the Easter egg hunt in the morning, it can be draining. This is a common day for families to return home from trips to visit relatives. Traffic is likely to be congested on Easter Monday.

Monday, December 25

Christmas is celebrated throughout the world. In Australia, it's a four-day weekend in 2017. Christmas lands on the Monday, with Boxing Day following on the Tuesday. This is another great chance for families who live far away from each other to travel. Christmas is traditionally celebrated around a Christmas tree, with a gift exchange in the morning. In the evening, there is often a feast with family members and even close friends. Some choose to have the meal on Christmas Eve, while others choose to enjoy it on Boxing Day. For some families, it's important to attend church services.

Tuesday, December 26

Boxing Day ends the Christmas weekend in Australia. Families will often be traveling home on this day, so there is likely to be delays in traffic and flights. If you're hoping to avoid the traffic, you're advised to travel home the following day. Plan ahead and book the extra day off work if you can. If you're not planning to travel, Easter Monday will be a nice day off. You may even indulge in leftover food. Unfortunately, not everywhere offers Boxing Day as a day off, so make sure to check with your place of employment!ay even indulge in leftover food.
